
This is only an adhoc list of file format extensions.  If you feel a
file format should be added or a file extension changed to something
else then e-mail me with the name of the file format, the most used file 
extension(s) and a description/reference for the format.


TXT or TEXT  -  a standard text file.
 
E00  -  Arc/Info interchange file.

DXF  -  AutoCAD drawing interchange file.   

MIF  -  MapInfo interchange file.

DLG or DO  - Digital Line Graph, provided by the Earth Science Information Center of the USGS. 

ASC or ASCII  -  a standard ascii character file.

MOSS  -  an export file formate radable by the U.S. Department of Interior's MOSS public
domain GIS.

IGDS  -  Interactive Graphic Design Software, and interchange format for Intergraph
Microstation software.

AMS  -  Automated Mapping System, the digitizing subsystem of MOSS (WAMS)

DIME -  Dual Independant Map Encoding, from the U.S. Census Bureau's Metropolitan Map
Series.

TIGER  -  Topologically Integrated Geographic Encodeing and Referency System, a line
network product fo the TIGER system available from the U.S. Census Bureau.

GRASS  -  Geographical Resource Analysis Support System, is a public domain GIS from the 
Army Corps of Engineers Construction Engineering Research Laboratory (CERL).

ETAK  -  a digital street network ascii file available from ETAK, Inc.

DEM  -  Digital Elevation Model of USGS or TAME formats, regularly-spaced data. 

SVF  -  Simple Vector Format, regularly-spaced data.

ERD or ERDAS  -  image format.

TIN  -  Irregularly-spaced data.

EPS  -  Encapsulated PostScript for printing to devices with PostScript interpreters.

CGM  -  Computer Graphics Metafile (CGM).

ADOBE or ADB  -  Adobe Illustrator format.

SIF  -  Standard Interchange Format, for porting of a file to a SCITEX graphic systems.  

BIL and BIP  -  an ascii data description file that describes the layout of the image data.

RLC  -  run-length compressed format.

SUN  -  Sun rasterfile.

ZIP  -  Files from ZIP compression utlities.

GZ   -  GZIP utility

TGZ  -  Unix tar and Gzipped

Z    -  Unix compress utility

TAR  -  Unix tape archive 

GIF -  Graphic Interchange Format

JPEG - Joint Photographic Experts Group

TIFF - Tag Image File Format

PDF  - Portable Document Format

SHP - ArcView shape files

CSP - compressed shapefiles
